I've noticed internal backup is no longer working in a recent version. Before I investigate: have there been any changes to this functionality?

Try the latest version. Last Thursday, another community member called my attention to the fact that the module export functionality was not working. I found that there was some problem with the dzZip/dzUnzip libraries being used so I migrated all that code to native PHP zip functionality in order to use a maintained (secure) and fast compressing functionality.
