The milky ridges of Wight and Purbeck were a single formation prior to they were breached by waters from the River Frome throughout the last ice age, forming the Solent and also transforming Wight right into an island. The Needles, in addition to Old Harry Rocks on Purbeck, stand for the edges of this violation.
