That screen was false hope. It sat there for quite a while before I attempted to log in and got a 500 error. I was tailing the error log for apache, but nothing showed up there either. It's still a mystery. I have a fair idea what the installupdater.php is supposed to do, but for whatever reason it wasn't able to do it.
